About Myrtle
THE STORY OF MYRTLE
The idea for Myrtle’s story came from my daughter’s
experience with a bully. After lots of tears and many meetings
with guidance professionals in her middle school, the idea was
to turn a painful situation into a positive one; where instead
of feeling like a victim, she would become empowered, stronger
and more self-confident. It worked.

THE DUMMY
A
picture book starts to really take shape with the “dummy”,
where I begin to put the words and drawings together in book form.
I made a little dummy for Myrtle because I wanted to create a small
book that children could curl up with. They could read it under
the covers by themselves or on a lap with a caring adult. .

The dummy is where I really get to know the characters in my
book. I takes more than one dummy to really get to know everyone.
When I made the first dummy Myrtle was a girl and so was Frances.
By the last dummy the characters were all mice! Click on the picture
of the dummy to compare the first dummy to the last dummy.

SKETCHES

I
made lots of character sketches of different animals before I decided
what I wanted Myrtle to look like. To see what Myrtle could have
looked like as a cat, a rabbit or even a goose, click on the Myrtle
sketch.
