REFERENCE
Before I begin the final artwork, I always
need to know what things really look like. For Bob, I did not have
to look very far!
Henrietta, the cat, is really my daughter's cat, Zulu.
|

I borrowed Chuck's rooster while I was working on the book. When a
fox came, Chuck's friend Nancy called and offered her rooster. He
learned to crow while he was with us. His first sounds were "ert-ERT-ert".

Fred is based on another one of Chuck's roosters.
I spent some time in Chuck's coop with my sketchbook and camera.

.
Max, my friend's son, was out in his pond before school catching
one of his favorite frogs. Pete arrived at my door in a bucket with
a note from Max. "This is Pete. He likes bugs". It took
me a while to figure out that he preferred his bugs to still be
moving!

SKETCHES
I
make color sketches before I start the final artwork for a book. I like
to play with my paints, pens and pencils. I need to decide what I want
my pictures to look like.
These are some color sketches for Bob. These sketches
were done in pencil and watercolor.
